Workshop Description

Restorative justice is a response to harmful incidents that seeks the direct inclusion of all involved. The goal is to meaningfully address the harm and foster renewed relationships. Drawing on the work of Canada’s restorative justice pioneers and best practices around the globe, this training will deliver the essential skills of convening harm-focused dialogue processes within community, organizational, and educational settings. This is a highly interactive workshop where participants will practice and gain confidence in facilitating a model of dialogue that is participant-driven, culturally sensitive, and empowering for all involved.

About This Workshop

During this event, participants will:

  • Deepen their understanding of the needs and experiences of people involved in harmful situations
  • Gain valuable new insights into the limitations of traditional punitive discipline
  • Build an understanding of restorative justice as a philosophy and mindset that can inform their everyday work with people
  • Develop skills in group facilitation and interpersonal problem solving
  • Learn and practice a flexible structure for restorative justice dialogue
  • Apply the principles of restorative justice to the situations that matter most at work
  • Through group discussion and reflection, get to know others with an interest in innovative approaches to discipline and justice

 

Target Audience

This is an intermediate level workshop intended for anyone wishing to learn more about the principles of restorative justice.

Method of Delivery

Presentation, video, case study exercises, experiential practice, personal reflection, and small group discussions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • List the principles of restorative justice as contrasted with retributive justice
  • Describe the role of shame in perpetuating cycles of violence and abuse
  • Define common needs of those who have suffered, caused, and witnessed harm
  • Identify steps to apply a restorative justice framework to their own environment
  • Facilitate preparatory meetings for face-to-face conferences
  • Facilitate face-to-face restorative justice conferences

About Our Workshops

About the Presenter

Judah Oudshoorn, MA

Portrait of Judah Oudshoorn, MA

Judah teachers CTRI workshops in the areas of restorative justice, violence prevention, and conflict resolution. He is a professor, author, and mediator, teaching in the areas of conflict resolution and criminal justice. Judah holds a Master's degree in Conflict Transformation and is a PhD student in Social Work. He has many years of experience supporting victims of serious crime and working with men who have used violence towards partners and children. Judah believes that violence has a ripple effect, yet kindness makes waves. He has found that appropriate support of people harmed can foster healing, and that appropriate accountability of people who have caused harm can bring about change. As a trainer, Judah is an engaging presenter, who fluidly interacts with learners and fosters critical thinking.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled seven or more days prior to the workshop are refundable, minus a $50.00 administrative fee. Alternatively, you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than seven days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to attend, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person who will be attending.

We reserve the right to cancel workshops due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of workshop fees only. Please make travel arrangements with this in mind.

Children and unregistered guests are not permitted in the meeting rooms.

You Will Receive

A spiral bound training manual and workshop certificate, as well as morning and afternoon refreshments. Participants are on their own for lunch from noon until 1:00 p.m., unless otherwise stated. For live-stream participants, you will receive a pdf copy of the manual.

Continuing Education Credit

While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: There are six continuing education credits earned for each day of training. For example, a one-day workshop earns six continuing education hours, while a two-day workshop earns 12 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.
