About the trainer

Marwa Fadol, MA, RPsych

Marwa is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta, holding a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria. She works as a Mental Health Therapist at the School Based Mental Health Program with Alberta Health Services, providing therapeutic services to children and youth ages 6 - 18. Marwa also consults with school professionals around areas of mental health in the school setting. In her private practice she works with families around various issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and family relationships. In addition, Marwa consults with a variety of professionals and organizations around the topic of cultural diversity, specifically around working with immigrant and refugee families, and with Muslim families. As a clinician she believes that people are the experts in their own lives and have within them the strength and the capacity to enact change. Marwa approaches her work through an attachment and developmental lens, and sees that her role as a therapist is to help empower people to write their own life stories, to explore their own values and beliefs about how the world works, and to develop authentic fulfilling relationships. As a trainer she brings warmth and humour and draws on her varied experiences to make for an engaging, relevant training experience.

Helping professionals regularly encounter challenging forms of resistance in their clients, and feel unable to respond in an effective way. This workshop is geared towards those new to working with resistant clients or professionals who are looking for new ways to facilitate the change process in the people they work with. Participants will be challenged to reassess their methods of interacting with resistant clients, and bring a new, collaborative, client-centered approach to their work. Drawing from the approaches of Motivational Interviewing, Positive Discipline and Internal Family Systems Model, this experiential workshop will equip helping professionals with an enhanced style and new strategies that will strengthen relationships and maximize potential for motivating change.

Target Audience

This is an introductory-intermediate level workshop intended for counselors, teachers, social service and health care professionals and anyone seeking additional ways of working with resistance.

Method of Delivery

Lecture, personal reflection, video, case study exercises, skill development and small group discussion

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Have a clearer understanding of resistance; including the factors that contribute to it, and what purpose it serves.
  • Have the abililty to recognize signs of readiness for change, and how to respond in a way that motivates and supports change.
  • Apply a three stage strategy to create an environment where potential for change is maximized.
  • Apply strategies for identifying and moving out of power struggles.
  • Know what areas to assess and points to consider when change is not happening.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled 7 or more days prior to the workshop are refundable, minus a $50.00 administrative fee. Alternatively you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than 7 days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to attend, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person who will be attending.

We reserve the right to cancel workshops due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of workshop fees only. Please make travel arrangements with this in mind.

Children and unregistered guests are not permitted in the meeting rooms.

You Will Receive

A spiral bound training manual and workshop certificate as well as morning and afternoon refreshments. Participants are on their own for lunch from noon to 1:00 PM, unless otherwise stated above. For livestream participants, you will receive a pdf copy of the manual.

Continuing Education Credit

While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: A two day workshops earns 12 continuing education hours and a one day workshop earns 6 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.
