Workshop Description

This is a live virtual event using Zoom, an online meeting platform. Please check system requirements prior to registering.

Whether someone is working as a general helper, counsellor, or administrator, there are key areas that are essential to providing helpful, collaborative, and ethical services. This workshop provides the fundamental understanding and skills required for working with people in a helping capacity. Participants will learn core skills in the areas of communication, listening, service coordination, ethics, diversity, and promoting helper resilience. These insights will help to reduce employee burnout and turnover while also improving service delivery.

Target Audience

This is an introductory level workshop intended for people in a wide variety of helping roles including social service and health care workers, social workers, support workers, school personnel.

Method of Delivery

Presentation, video, case study exercises, experiential practice, personal reflection, and small group discussions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Identify skills for relationship building and effective communication in a helping role
  • Summarize important emotional and cultural awareness skills for helpers
  • List case management steps that fit within the parameters of one’s role
  • Plan steps for a trauma-informed approach that will enhance both client and helper resilience

Shelly Qualtieri, MA, RSW

Portrait of Shelly Qualtieri, MA, RSW

Shelly is a Registered Social Worker and has been an energetic practitioner and educator in the field of domestic violence, suicide intervention, youth justice, child welfare, mental health, and homelessness for over 25 years. In addition to training with CTRI she has a private counselling practice where she focuses on wellness, difficult conversations, and healthy relationships. She believes that helping people work through difficult times requires a holistic approach to wellness and meaningful connection. Whether it’s through a mindfulness practice, strength base - person-centered approach Shelly meets individuals where they are at. As a facilitator, she is a warm, passionate and engaging presenter who uses examples and strategies that participants can bring directly into their work with others. Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled seven or more days prior to the workshop/live stream are refundable, minus a $50.00 administrative fee. Alternatively, you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than seven days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to take part in the event, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person.

We reserve the right to cancel an event due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of workshop/live-stream fees only.

You Will Receive

Login details approximately 3-4 days prior to the event date, as well as a PDF e-manual, and a PDF workshop certificate.

Continuing Education Credit

While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: There are six continuing education credits earned for each day of training. For example, a one-day workshop earns six continuing education hours, while a two-day workshop earns 12 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.

Filming and Photography

Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute reserves the right to film video content and take photography at our events. Some of our workshops will be live-streamed and filmed for participants not in attendance. Filming and photography may also be used for promotional materials.
