Workshop Description

This is a live virtual event using Zoom, an online meeting platform. Please check system requirements prior to registering.

For those who work in an environment where there is potential for violence, it is important to develop the skills needed to defuse dangerous situations. This workshop is designed to teach people to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. The training will explore how anger and violence interplay, including opportunities for self-assessment of personal communication styles. Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to assess the potential for violence and respond with a diverse set of interpersonal tools and strategies designed to defuse potentially violent situations.

Target Audience

This is an introductory-intermediate level workshop intended for anyone wanting to learn more about violence and interpersonal strategies useful in de-escalating the imminent threats of violence.

Method of Delivery

Presentation, video, case study exercises, experiential practice, and small group discussions.

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the role of anger in violent incidents
  • Identify their own styles of interaction
  • Describe a framework for defusing potentially violent situations
  • Identify potential risk factors

About the Trainer

Shelly Qualtieri, MA, RSW

Portrait of Shelly Qualtieri, MA, RSW

Shelly has firsthand experience in seeing the impact of how vital it is for individuals and organizations to increase and develop their violence-prevention capabilities. She has worked in the social service field for over 25 years with various populations within Australia and Canada. Shelly’s experience spans from working within maximum security prisons, the child protection field, domestic violence, suicide awareness and prevention, mental health, homelessness, poverty, and her private practice. She has extensive experience in crisis intervention and is skilled at helping others develop understanding and increase capacity to be better equipped to de-escalating potentially violent behaviours. She is a Registered Social Worker who holds a Master of Investigations Management. As a facilitator, Shelly is a warm, passionate, and engaging presenter who uses examples and strategies that participants can bring directly into their work with others.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled seven or more days prior to the workshop/live stream are refundable, minus a $50.00 administrative fee. Alternatively, you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than seven days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to take part in the event, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person.

We reserve the right to cancel an event due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of workshop/live-stream fees only.

Login details approximately seven days prior the live stream date, as well as a PDF e-manual and workshop certificate.

Continuing Education Credit

While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: There are six continuing education credits earned for each day of training. For example, a one-day workshop earns six continuing education hours, while a two-day workshop earns 12 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.
