Workshop Description

Anxiety represents our body’s natural alarm system, signalling the possibility of danger. When this response arises too frequently or intensely and doesn’t match actual situations of danger, it can interfere with life and cause great distress. While every person experiences anxiety, it is estimated that over a quarter of the population will experience anxiety at levels that cause distress in their lives. This workshop will explore when anxiety is adaptive and in order, compared to when it becomes disordered. Participants will learn practical and accessible strategies which can be applied to all ages, and help address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social aspects of anxiety.

Target Audience

This is an introductory to intermediate level workshop intended for social service and health care professionals, counsellors, social workers, school personnel, and anyone working with those who struggle with anxiety.

Method of Delivery

Presentation, video, case study exercises, experiential practice, personal reflection, and small group discussions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the definition and role of anxiety
  • Identify when anxiety is becoming more ‘disordered’
  • Describe how anxiety manifests in the brain and nervous system
  • Recognize signs of regulation
  • Identify an integrated plan for treating anxiety
  • Apply strategies for increasing regulation and reducing anxiety

About the Trainer

Emily Bushell, MA, RCT, CCC

Portrait of Emily Bushell, MA, RCT, CCC

Emily holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and is a Registered Counselling Therapist and a Certified Canadian Counsellor. She has both clinical and community experience supporting people who are working through a wide variety of mental health concerns, including trauma and addictions. In addition to training with CTRI, Emily works as a counsellor in a private practice, primarily with clients who have experienced trauma or are struggling with substance misuse. She is passionate about helping people foster resilience and wellness within themselves and their environments, and believes that we are all capable of achieving stability and growth. As a trainer, Emily is knowledgeable, sensitive, and collaborative. Emily brings an empathetic and positive energy to her work. Read blogs written by Emily here.

Cancellation Policy

Registrations cancelled seven or more days prior to the event are refundable, minus a administrative fee. Alternatively, you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than seven days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to attend the event, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person.

We reserve the right to cancel events due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of event fees only.

Continuing Education Credit

While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: There are six continuing education credits earned for each day of training. For example, a one-day workshop earns six continuing education hours, while a two-day workshop earns 12 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.

Filming and Photography

Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute reserves the right to film video content and take photography at our events. Some of our workshops will be live-streamed and filmed for participants not in attendance. Filming and photography may also be used for promotional materials.
