Sheri Coburn, MSW, RSW
Sheri is a Registered Social Worker who holds a Master of Social Work degree and a Bachelor's degree in Criminology. She has a diverse professional background with experiences as a correctional officer, addictions counsellor and developer and coordinator of a domestic violence outreach program. In addition to her work with CTRI, Sheri is also a counsellor in a private practice setting...
For those who work in an environment where there is potential for violence, it is important to develop the skills needed to defuse dangerous situations. This workshop is designed to teach people to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. The training will explore how anger and violence interplay, including opportunities for self-assessment of personal styles. Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to assess the potential for violence and respond with a diverse set of interpersonal tools and strategies designed to defuse potentially violent situations.

This is an introductory-intermediate level workshop intended for anyone wanting to learn more about violence and interpersonal strategies useful in de-escalating the imminent threats of violence
Method of Delivery
Lecture, video, case study exercises, skill development and small group discussion
At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Understand the role of anger in violent incidents.
- Identify their own styles of interaction.
- Describe a framework for defusing potentially violent situations.
- Identify potential risk factors.
- Apply principles learned to their own environment.

Registrations cancelled 7 or more days prior to the workshop are refundable, minus a $50.00 administrative fee. Alternatively you may receive a credit to attend a future training. Cancellations less than 7 days prior to the workshop are non-refundable. If at any time you are unable to attend, you are welcome to transfer your registration to another individual at no extra cost. In this case, please notify CTRI of the name of the alternate person who will be attending.
We reserve the right to cancel workshops due to unforeseen circumstances or under-enrolment. Liability is limited to a refund of workshop fees only. Please make travel arrangements with this in mind.

You Will Receive
A spiral bound training manual and workshop certificate as well as morning and afternoon refreshments. Participants are on their own for lunch from noon to 1:00 PM. For livestream participants, you will receive a pdf copy of the manual.

Continuing Education Credit
While many associations and licensing bodies accept CTRI workshops for continuing education credits, questions about approval should be directed to the specific association or licensing body for which you are requesting the credits. Credit hours: A two day workshops earns 12 continuing education hours and a one day workshop earns 6 hours. A certificate will be awarded upon the completion of the workshop.
